I’m terrible at naming. I don’t give my sermons titles. I didn’t come up with the names for either of my books. I have no suggestions for editors on what to call an article. Once I named a blog after Lorraine Hansberry’s The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, which was obscure enough that no one knew what it meant.
As it is, my original plan for this Substack has evolved. I wanted a place to land my theological frustrations and to offer, perhaps, better offerings. Instead, I write what I want, sometimes about theology but also Barbie, trans protections, socialism, Palestine, writing, abolition, and why I hate the New York Times. I give monthly recommendations. Mostly writing when I want and what I want to write that I don’t think finds a place in the publishing spaces I’m connected to.
Things change, so has this space, and despite my terrible track record with nomenclature, I’m giving it another go.
Let’s call it The Leavings, a place for writing that has no other home.
Thanks for reading.
